View from the Palisades
by John L. Peyton
About five miles north of Silver Bay on Highway 61 a side road runs up to the top of the palisades. Here you get one of the very fine views over Lake Superior. This watercolor was painted there, only looking down instead of out over the water. Here, as at the Mount Josephine overlook beyond Grand Portage, you can see the backs of the gulls flying below you.

I set my stool close enough to the edge to be able to look over and far enough back not to be in any danger. But when I was making my way back up the rocks with my packsack of painting gear on my back I got a little off balance and stumbled several steps backwards. There was still space to spare, but it showed how an accident could happen.
