This is the old name for what is now shown on the maps as the Gulf of California. In this part of Mexico the mountains come down steeply to the sea. It is a harsh and beautiful shoreline. We camped under the coconut palms and swam in clear water off the sandy beach. Then I cautiously climbed through the cactus to the top of the steep hill on a projecting point to paint this watercolor.
