Loading the Voyageur
By John L. Peyton
This is one of the two boats that carry passengers and cargo between Grand Portage and Isle Royale. It provides a more interesting trip than the larger more tourist-oriented Wenonah.
The Voyageur is primarily a fish-boat. You know that as soon as you step aboard. It circles the island, stopping at each fisherman’s dock to pick up the catch. It ties up overnight at Rock Harbor, where you can stay at a lodge overnight. You may leave a boat anywhere along the route, stay as long as you please, and get aboard again when it comes round on one of its twice-a-week trips.
Isle Royale is 45 miles long with just two resorts, one at each end. It is a national park and well-taken-care-of. You feel that the whole north shore must have been like this before the white man moved in.
