Demonstration and Audience
by John L.Peyton
I stopped my truck where a valley dropped away below the road and then stretched on to cliffs that rose cool above the autumn foliage on the far side of the river. I hung my camp stool and light pack of pastels on my shoulder, and hobbled and caned my way to what seemed the best view. Once having started work, I became so engrossed, as anybody does when painting in such a place, that I lost track of time and of what was going on around me. When, finally, I had finished the picture and come back to earth, I had a strong feeling that I was being observed. I swiveled around on my stool. A bear was sitting there, ten feet behind me, watching intently. I felt that I should hand him the chalk and say, “Now you try it. Work with the clean point, don’t smooch it, and keep it simple.” But he was only looking. He got up and walked off into the woods.
